Flying insects that can carry life threatening diseases?? Sounds like one of the 7 plagues! Most of the time, mosquitoes give us nothing more than an annoying itchy bump that can sometimes take weeks to go away.
West Nile Virus
West Nile virus?? Like Egypt? Oh, I don’t have to worry about that because I live in Arizona, right?? WRONG!! West Nile virus is a disease that is spread primarily through mosquito bites, and can be very harmful. Only about 1 in every 5 people who get West Nile virus will show any symptoms.
Those symptoms can range between:
- Body aches
- Joint pains
Most people who get West Nile Virus will recover completely, however weakness and fatigue can last for weeks or even months. Honestly, no one has time to deal with that!!
Lyme disease?? Isn’t that the one that comes from ticks?? Well yes, but there are several different types of bugs that carry lyme disease, and mosquitoes are one of them. Chances are that you might know someone who has lyme disease, and its lasting effects are not pretty.
Some of the immediate symptoms include:
- Skin Rash (often with a bulls-eye or target ring shape)
Lyme disease if left untreated can cause a lot of issues to the joints, heart, and the nervous system. A lot of people who have lasting effects will have neck and back pain that can last their entire lives. You do NOT want to deal with that, like is already hard enough!
Yellow Fever??? How about lets make it disco fever?! (WE WISH) As of right now, there is no cure for yellow fever!! Yellow Fever is primarily spread through mosquitoes and can cause a lot of damage if not caught early on!
Symptoms of yellow fever include:
- Sudden onset of fever
- Severe headache
- Back pain
- Body aches
Some Severe symptoms include:
- Yellow Skin (jaundice)
- Organ failure
Yellow Fever can be deadly if left untreated! Of those who develop these more severe symptoms, 30-60% die.
