Exploring Maricopa’s Hidden World: What Does a Gopher Hole Look Like?

Ever stepped outside to find a weird little bump in your otherwise pristine Maricopa lawn? Maybe it looks like a miniature volcano, or perhaps a rogue baseball player decided to take a dirt nap. Well, hold on before you grab your gardening gloves—that little bump might be your first clue to a resident gopher!

But how can you tell for sure? What does a gopher hole look like exactly? Fear not, fellow Maricopan! Green Machine Pest Control is here to shed some light (or, should we say, shade?) on these subterranean secret-keepers.

Unearthing the Signs: What to Look For

Freshly dug gopher hole in Maricopa, Arizona lawn.

Gophers, those little burrowing bandits, are notorious for creating a network of tunnels underground. While you won’t see them popping their heads out for tea parties, you’ll definitely notice the handiwork they leave behind. Here’s what to keep an eye out for:

The Telltale Mound

This is the most common sign of a gopher hole. Unlike a molehill, which is a small, volcano-shaped pile of dirt, a gopher mound is more like a horseshoe or a kidney bean—kind of like a tiny dirt smile on your lawn.

These mounds are typically 6 to 12 inches high and 1 to 2 feet in diameter, and they’re formed from the excess dirt the gopher pushes out while digging its tunnels.  What does a gopher hole look like on the surface? Think of a collapsed tunnel entrance with a fresh pile of loose dirt beside it.

Fresh vs. Abandoned

The color and texture of the mound can also be telling. Fresh mounds, created by active gophers, will be dark brown or black and have a loose, crumbly feel. Older, abandoned mounds will be lighter in color and more compacted.

Hole Hunting

\ While the mound is the most obvious sign, you might also find the actual entrance hole itself. This will typically be located near the base of the mound, on the side facing away from the displaced dirt.

The opening will likely be small and round, just big enough for the gopher to squeeze through.

The Bare Patch Blues

Have you noticed a mysterious patch of dead or dying grass in your yard? This could be another sign of a gopher’s presence.

As they tunnel underground, they disrupt the roots of grasses and other plants, leading to wilting and death above ground.

Why Should You Care About Gopher Holes?

Those little dirt piles might seem harmless at first, but gophers can wreak havoc on your Maricopa property. Their tunnels can damage sprinkler systems, create unsightly blemishes in your lawn, and even pose a tripping hazard.

But more importantly, gophers are relentless eaters, and their favorite meal is the root systems of your precious plants, flowers, and even trees. Left unchecked, these burrowing bandits can transform your once-thriving landscape into a patchy wasteland.
