Do you have Bees or Wasps?
Bees and wasps are insects that are often mistaken for each other. While some bees are tiny, others can reach nearly two inches long. Because of their yellow and black color pattern, these larger bees can look remarkably like wasps or yellow jackets. Identifying which type of insect you are dealing with is the first step in dealing with an infestation.

Bees do not often travel far from their hive, so if you see a lot of bees in your yard, there is a good chance there is a hive nearby. They tend to live in large colonies that can have several thousand members. Bees become an issue when they swarm. Bees typically swarm when they are looking for a new place to build a hive. Swarms are most likely to happen in Arizona between February and May.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE BEES SWARMING
First and foremost, you do not want to agitate the swarming bees. While they are not naturally aggressive, swarms of bees can be incredibly sensitive, and even loud noises can cause them to feel threatened, and they will attack. Additionally, what you think may be simple honeybees, might be Africanized honeybees, which are significantly more aggressive.

- Water meters
- Attics
- Debris piles
- Wood piles
- Sheds
