HOW TO IDENTIFY IF YOU HAVE GOPHERS

Pocket gophers are one of the most common outdoor rodents that plague homeowners. They are small, light brown, and rely on vegetation for food. They are well-known diggers who build tunnels and burrows underground. They use the tunnels to transport food back and forth from their burrows. The tunnel system can be a mere six to 12 inches underground, while nesting burrows can be as deep as six feet.

You may have gophers if:

  • You find fresh dirt piles that are fan-shaped
  • You see open and plugged holes in your yard that are around three inches in diameter
  • Plants and trees are dying without an explanation
  • You’re having trouble with underground utility lines and irrigation or sprinkler lines

Many people mistake moles and voles for gophers. Unlike gophers, moles do not eat plants, and instead of fan-shaped mounds of dirt, you will find circular mounds that are symmetrical. Meanwhile, voles create small holes in your yard but do not leave piles at all. The first step in dealing with outdoor rodents is identifying what type you have. Our gopher removal specialists will inspect your property and determine which pest you’re dealing with, providing you with the best gopher extermination plan for your situation.

Unlike other pests, gophers can come and go. They may be very active in your yard, and then you may have a period where they appear to be gone. However, once they are established, they are likely to come back unless you work to eradicate them. You may also be surprised to learn that, outside of the breeding season, gophers are more solitary than many other household pests, and just one gopher can create a tunnel system may have up to 100 gophers and may stretch 200 yards.

There are several methods for gopher removal, including:

  • Baiting
  • Carbon monoxide treatment
  • Trapping

The nature of your situation will determine what the best gopher extermination method is. Most methods require more than one visit to ensure that the problem is handled effectively. Green Machine Pest Control is also committed to providing you with safe pest control solutions that you can feel comfortable having around your children and pets. We will discuss your needs with you and ensure you are receiving the treatment that is most appropriate for your circumstances.
